LEGO ART


Stefano Bolcato lives and works in Rome. Italy. He specializes in works with lego figures, this time wall art paiting of Lego characters in classic atmospheres.

He started as a self-taught in the 80s, later he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts with Alfonso

Avanessian and Giovanni Arcangeli at the Ornamental Arts School in Rome. Drawing, painting,

photography and video are the expressive forms used for his work. Themes and subjects vary in the

artistic proposal of Stefano Bolcato, the main part of his production is figurative painting. A research

that moves between metaphysical atmospheres, social themes and particular attention to the value

of the artistic and cultural heritage.

He is passionate about Lego figures, he’s been painting them for years already. For this series, he

decided to push the envelop and chose to reimagi ne iconic painting by replacing with Lego figurines.

From the famous Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait or Andy Warhol’s Marilyn or Leonardo da Vinci’s Portrait of

an Unknown Woman (La Belle Ferroniere), Bolcato’s masterize his oil painting techniques arriving as close

as the originals…with his particular style signature.

It’s not Bolcato’s first go at LEGO art. He’s known for his paintings using LEGO people; it’s a practice he

started due to his childhood love of this classic toy. “LEGO were always my favorite toy as a child. The

fascination is a holdover from my childhood that I brought into adulthood,” Bolcato says “One day I thought about how the figures could become characters, and that they would have the ideal features to take on a story and tell it effectively.
